What the four categories mean

Full private cover

Private Krankenvollversicherung — this replaces statutory cover entirely. Open to employees earning above the JAEG threshold, the self-employed, civil servants and students. It is a long-term decision: returning to statutory cover later is difficult and, after 55, usually impossible. 24 of the insurers here offer it.

Supplementary

Zusatzversicherung — sits on top of your statutory cover and closes specific gaps: dental work, private hospital rooms, glasses, treatment by a senior consultant. You keep your statutory cover. Far lower commitment than switching systems, and reversible. 28 insurers offer it.

Travel

Reisekrankenversicherung — covers medical treatment while you are abroad, including the repatriation costs that neither statutory nor private German cover pays in full. Cheap, annual, and the one product on this page almost everyone should hold. 28 insurers write it.

Short stays in Germany

Cover for a defined period in Germany — language students, interns, visiting researchers, people on a job-seeker visa, and family joining on a visitor visa. It satisfies the insurance requirement for a residence permit without committing you to a permanent German policy. A specialist corner of the market: 2 insurers here focus on it.

How we work with these insurers

Private cover is not standardised the way statutory cover is. Two policies at a similar price can differ enormously in what they pay for, how the premium behaves over thirty years, and how much of the risk lands on you. That is why this is a list of 31 insurers rather than a shortlist of three — the right answer genuinely depends on your situation.

We earn more arranging private cover than statutory cover. That is how the German market pays brokers, and it is a reason to be sceptical of anyone recommending PKV, including us. So we publish the tools to check our reasoning: our premium calculator projects the cost across your whole life, our analysis of premium rises in old age draws on 20 years of data, and we have written up the six profiles for whom private cover is usually the wrong choice.

Being listed here does not mean we recommend an insurer. It means we can arrange a policy with them if they turn out to be the right fit for you. If statutory cover is the better answer, we will say so — and arrange that instead.
